Wheels & Deals
by Bill Richardson
Originally from Ireland, Samuel Richardson came to the small southern town of Wyndham, New Zealand, and so the history of his branch of the Richardson family in New Zealand began. Samuel ran a stage coach and livery business in Wyndham. His son Robert became a builder and his son Harold developed the building business into one of the largest in Southland. Along the way they developed other interests as well.
Three generations later, Bill Richardson presumed he would enter the family business, but at the age of 20 while training to be a builder, he found he had his own dreams. He wanted to be in the transport business. This is the inspirational story of how he built his business which today extends throughout New Zealand. H W Richardson Group Ltd grew from its Southland base to become one of New Zealand’s largest privately owned companies with transport, readymix concrete plants and other businesses throughout the country.
Bill Richardson’s story is told in his own words with humour and dignity, but it’s more than a story of achievement and success. It tells of hard work and tragedy. It’s a timely explanation of the philosophy of a man who recognised the value of family and friendship and how fair dealings must underpin all business transactions. Above all it’s a warm acknowledgement of how a family type culture remains the best and most satisfying way for a business to grow.
Along the way Bill Richardson built an impressive collection of vintage and old trucks in Invercargill, the largest collection in the country, visited by people from all over the world. Bill Richardson made a unique contribution to New Zealand business life and his story is a reminder that values still have a place in a fast changing corporate world.
